Which payment methods should an online store in Morocco accept?

Updated 8 October 2026 · the Tourak Digital Group team

The short answer

Most Moroccan stores need cash on delivery, because many customers prefer it for a first order, plus card payment through a local acquiring contract. Since a 2024 Competition Council decision, merchants sign that contract with a bank or licensed payment institution, while CMI remains the technical platform behind the transactions. Add cards once you have repeat customers or higher order values.

Cash on delivery: the default, with a catch

COD removes the fear of paying a shop you do not know. The cost is refused parcels: wrong numbers, customers who change their mind, couriers who cannot reach anyone. Confirm every order by phone or WhatsApp before shipping, ask for the city and neighbourhood on the order form, and show the delivery time on each product page.

Card payments: how it works now

Start with your bank and ask for its e-commerce acquiring offer. Expect to provide a trade register entry or auto-entrepreneur card, an ICE number, a business bank account and a finished site with terms of sale, a returns policy, a contact page and a privacy policy. Once approved, you receive test credentials; we connect the gateway and test it before going live.

Selling to customers abroad

If you ship to Moroccans living abroad or sell to visitors, card payment becomes essential, since cash on delivery does not travel. Check with your acquirer which international cards are accepted, and show prices clearly in dirhams.

What to put on the delivery page

List the cities you deliver to, the expected delay for each area, whether customers can open the parcel before paying, and what happens if the product does not match the photos. Keep sentences short, and write them in French and Arabic if your customers read both. Place the link next to the order button: customers who know the rules refuse fewer parcels at the door.

Should I keep cash on delivery after adding cards?
Yes. Offer both. Many customers use COD for a first order and switch to card once they trust the store.
Who handles the integration?
